The founding of Podere “La Casella”

The Podere’s origin is documented in the archives of the Leopoldino Cadastral Register, where it is portrayed in its original form. According to the historical registers of the Municipality of Montalcino, it originated in around 1300. At the time, it was not a residential property but served as a workshop for the production of baskets used for the transportation of goods. In days gone by, Montalcino was renowned for its craftsmanship. There are numerous records of workshops for the production of rope made from hemp, the crafting of leather goods and of pottery.

The original access route

A strategic point for the artisans of Montalcino

The Podere is right next to the walls of Montalcino, along the original access route to the village. Apparently, the land known as “Osticcio” that stretches from the top of the hill to the estate was covered with chestnut trees, which were important not for their fruit but for their wood. Softened in the waters of the nearby “Fosso del Trogolo”, the chestnut wood was easy to work with, and skilled local craftsmen would weave it to create baskets destined for the transportation of a variety of goods.

Trade

The trade routes

There is a road around “La Casella” which created the fortune of the Montalcino area in the past. The strategic position of this communication route made it fundamentally important to the trade of the time. It allowed travellers arriving from the Val d’Arbia, Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata to reach the village via the Cerbaia Gate, the historical point of access to Montalcino, on their way to the Maremma region.

Today

The recovery of Podere La Casella

In the 17th century, the Podere was transformed from workshop to residential property, undergoing numerous transformations over the years. Today, Podere La Casella is perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment and the architecture of Montalcino. Every construction, including the drystone walls of the terraces along the road leading to the town, is perfectly balanced, creating an authentic and aesthetically pleasing combination with the buildings of the old town.
